SafeSurf tm was the first no fee organization created specifically for families, founded in 1995 by Ray Soular and Wendy Simpson out of concern for children's ability to easily access adult material on the internet. In addition to publishing useful content for children, parents and educators, SafeSurf is implementing the SafeSurf Rating Standard on the Internet to bring parents, publishers, developers and technology together to make the Internet safe for children without the intrusion of censorship. Webmasters participate voluntarily by marking their web sites with a SafeSurf Rating, generated at the SafeSurf site.
SafeSurf acts as a resource for children of all ages, parents and educators. Children and parents can surf the Internet on Kids Wave!, a list of sites broken down into groups, with a section for parents. The SafeSurf Internet Lifeguard is a resource for parents and educators providing online safety basics and links to filtering software sites. Educators will find invaluable resources, including educational databases, libraries, crafts, projects, and lesson plans on the S.E.R.F. page (SafeSurf's Education Resource Files). Each site is reviewed with a brief description and a clickable link directly to the site.
